Jazz Legend Slide Hampton sits in with One More Once

One More Once had the pleasure to invite one of the living legends of jazz to perform for two nights at Montclair's  Trumpets Jazz Club in May  2018.   A dream come true for most jazz musicians, Slide joined us for our rehearsal and brought three of his compositions/arrangements which he wrote for the Maynard Ferguson Big Band of the '50s and '60s.  His charts on "Go East, Young Man," "Foxy," and "Frame For the Blues" gave us an incredible opportunity to play some music written by one of the greatest jazz arrangers of the 20th century.  Congrats to the PCTI Big Band and the West Milford HS Big Band for joining us for these great events.

SNL Trombonist STEVE TURRE joins OMO for 2 nights

In April 2018, Steve Turre joined One More Once for 2 nights and delighted the audience with his world-renowned conch shell playing, as well as his masterful trombone playing.  The students from Parsippany Hills HS and Cresskill HS also had a chance to perform along side Turre who gave everyone a show they will never forget.  This was a special treat for Mr. Turre as he had a chance to play in his hometown of Montclair, NJ.

INGRID JENSEN PERFORMS WITH ONE MORE ONCE

On Wednesday, March 28., Ingrid Jensen joined One More Once and the big band from JP Stevens HIgh School on the bandstand at Trumpets Jazz Club.  Jensen showed great diversity playing a variety of tunes including Dave Gibble's "slo' funk" version of My Funny Valentine, Groove Merchant from the Thad Jones Library, Tom Harrell's Sail Away and Vernal Suite, a tune composed and arranged by Ingrid's sister, Christine.

A powerful opening set by JP Stevens HS, directed by Andrew DeNicola showed why JPS has such an amazing reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the high school music world.

As is tradition on these evenings, One More Once invited a student from the High School band up to perform with us.  Varun Das proved why he was accepted as the drummer for the Grammy Band this past year!  Playing with One More Once on Groove Merchant, Varun played masterfully including trading 4s with saxophonist Mark Friedman before a 2 chorus drum solo of his own.  Das also played an arrangement entitled Portrait of Louis Armstrong, featuring Vinny Borselli, lead trumpet player for One More Once and elementary school music teacher in the Edison school district, which feeds JP Stevens HS.

ANTONIO HART JOINS ONE MORE ONCE FOR 2 NIGHTS

2018 started off strong with Antonio Hart joining One More Once for 2 great shows.
On February 11, OMO welcomed Livingston HS to perform the opening set, directed by Mr. Jim Hegedus.   In late March, the North Penn HS Navy Band traveled to Montclair from Lansdale, PA to take part in the festivities.  They also  had the opportunity to work with Antonio for a 2 hour clinic prior to their performance.
Both groups played fantastic sets and then enjoyed the sounds of One More Once.  Students from both schools sat in with us for a tune.  From Livingston, we brought up Eli Siegel on trombone and Ian Hurrell on Guitar and from North Penn, Srikar Katta and Jack Collins joined us to play on an original blues called "Square One," written by lead trumpet player, Vinny Borselli.

"The One More Once Big Band provided music for the affair. The high point of the night came when the impressive ensemble performed a swinging medley of familiar Mustang Band marching and pregame tunes, a dazzling arrangement that garnered a rousing standing ovation from the appreciative audience.
